Tree-Savers Reports Successful Launch of Private St Beetle Lab; 100,000 Predator Beetles Now Available to Fight HWA Infestation

Tree-Savers is reporting record numbers of St Beetles successfully raised and ready for distribution to the public in the fight against HWA. According to Jayme Longo, were on schedule to produce 100,000+ adult St Beetles for commercial distribution this first season.

This is encouraging news in the fight against HWA infestation of eastern and Carolina hemlock forests. Though rigorous scientific research has proven the St Beetle to be a highly effective biological control of the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, the problem to date has been the unavailability of the predator beetle for massive deployment. Tree-Savers new biological control laboratory which produces the beetle for commercial distribution is changing that. The success of their first breeding season and the availability of 100,000 beetles mean that forest service managers and private land owners now have new capability to stop and reverse HWA infestation. Its not too late to save these majestic trees says Longo.

About the St Beetle
The St Beetle is highly effective at stopping and reversing the spread of HWA because the voracious predator beetle only feeds on HWA and its life-cycle is synchronized with the life-cycle of HWA. The greater the HWA infestation, the faster the St Beetle reproduces. The reason HWA has spread so rapidly across eastern hemlock forests is that when the invasive HWA was introduced from Japan the St Beetle its natural predator did not come with it. Therefore, HWA has been able to consume entire forests unfettered in a short amount of time.

Now that Tree-Savers is producing record numbers of the predator beetle, there is new hope for bringing HWA under control. However, people who care about saving the hemlock forests have to do their part. Tree-Savers can supply the beetles and offer expert guidance, but forest service managers and property owners have to get the beetles on the trees. Were encouraged says Longo. Of the 100,000 in production, we've already received reserved orders for 25,000 beetles.

BHGRE Rand Realty Releases Real Estate Quarterly Market Report for Q4 2012

This week Better Homes and Gardens Rand released their Quarterly Market Report reviewing real estate market trends in Westchester and the Hudson Valley for the fourth quarter of 2012.
Rand Realty has been compiling this market report every quarter for almost eleven years, providing thousands of interested home buyers and sellers with objective analysis of the regional real estate market.
In the report, Rand discusses a surge in sales activity throughout the region, rising 19.3% from last year's fourth quarter. As for this year, sales were up 12.6% from 2011, and were higher than they've been at any time since 2007. Clearly, pricing at 2003-04 levels, historically low interest rates, and an improving economy have bolstered buyer demand throughout the area. Even with this increase in sales activity, though, durable price appreciation is not being seen. The average sales price for the region was up significantly in the fourth quarter itself, but was down 1.9% for the year compared to 2011.
Going forward, positive signs are foreseen for homeowners in the region. Rand projects that the market is entering a new cycle, one that will see continued increases in sales activity finally start to drive price appreciation by the end of the year. It's unlikely that the appreciation will be significant, maybe a few percentage points or so, but at least there are reasons to be optimistic about where the market is going. They have put the bottom of the housing market behind them, and are poised for better times in the future.
